VMWare announced an update today to fix several vulnerabilities in different versions of its virtualization software. One of the vulnerabilities would take advantage of the host to guest shared folder (HGFS) setup allowing access to the host's file system and allowing creation or modification of executable files in sensitive locations. VMWare does not that VMWare Server is not affected, nor are any versions of their ESX Server because they do not use Host to guest shared folders. According to Baseline Magazine, an upcoming survey by Symantec and Applied Research-West shows that the younger generation of workers may be putting your network at risk. The study shows the differences between IT users born before 1980 and after 1980. Reseachers found that the post-1980 IT users are more likely to use their work computers for personal use as well as professional use and nearly half of them admit to installing unauthorized software for personal use on their machines. The post-1980 users are also more likely to view web-based personal e-mail, visit social networking sites and view their personal finance or banking on their work machines. Several technology related blogs are reporting that Windows Vista Service Pack 1 will be available for download as soon as tomorrow. Microsoft is releasing this service pack to address specific reliability and performance issues in Windows Vista along with adding support for new types of hardware and several emerging standards. The service pack aslo addresses some management, deployment and support challenges that are found in Windows Vista. There is no word on whether Windows XP Service Pack 3 will be available at the same time, but the rumors surrounding the Windows Vista Service Pack are based on ship dates for Vista with the Service Pack preinstalled. Earlier today, Apple, Inc. announced plans to support Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and industry-standard corporate security standards in their upcoming iPhone update. This update, which is expected sometime in June of this year, will add push email, push contacts, push calendar and global address list support to the iphone making it a true enterprise solution. Microsoft Exchange server 2003 and 2007 will be supported by the iPhone 2.0 software update.
Another great enterprise feature being added to the iPhone 2.0 update the ability to remote wipe a device. This feature has been available on BlackBerry and with Goodlink for sometime.
